Acupuncture is the art and science of inserting thin needles into specific locations on the human body. It has been practiced for thousands of years and documented in ancient Chinese medical texts dating back to approximately 200 B.C.
Acupuncture is designed to stimulate and regulate a person’s Qi. Qi is the vital energy that inhabits and animates our physical bodies. To the acupuncturist, Qi is everything. For example, when a person’s Qi is in a depleted state, they’ll likely feel tired and run down. If their Qi is blocked or not moving properly inside the appropriate pathways, (which are referred to as channels or meridians in acupuncture practice) they’ll likely feel pain and muscular tension. When a person’s Qi is completely gone, they are clinically deceased.
Now, even though Qi has yet to be proven by modern scientific standards (and may never be), it is still a real thing and vital component of one’s physiology. In other words, just because your doctor doesn’t understand it or believe it to exist does not in any way detract from its power or reality. You experience your Qi every day, all the time. You just might not be aware of it, yet.
When an acupuncture needle makes contact with your Qi at a specific anatomical location, it causes a direct change in its movement and flow. If it’s stuck, acupuncture can get it moving again. If it’s depleted, acupuncture can help restore it. If it’s moving up when it should be moving down, or vice versa, acupuncture can correct it.

For example, if someone comes to see me for acid reflux (a condition where Stomach acid rises up and irritates the esophagus), I will insert needles in places that makes Qi move downward. If someone comes to see me and their Qi isn’t flowing properly or much at all, I will needle places on their body designed to get it moving, and properly. You would be amazed at how many health conditions get cleared up in such a simple way.
A person need not believe in Qi in order to receive acupunctures countless benefits. It can make the experience more engaging, but it’s not necessary. A teacher of mine once likened it to understanding the precise way in which a television works. Most of us don’t, but we can still enjoy our favorite shows, regardless.
My relationship with acupuncture goes back over a decade and it has never ceased to amaze, awaken and inspire me. I have witnessed it do some incredible things, on myself and others. It can restore balance and health to a body in direct, simple ways.
